style is certainly not a solid concept, it grows with you. but I believe it helps to define your style, so that you know what you're doing and don't go astray and become a fashion victim. with this idea in mind, I put together what I call a style map, accompanied by a couple style notes. want to be featured on analytic approach to style with your own style map? scroll down!

as much as I love shopping and thinking/reading/writing on style and fashion, I hate does-this-go-with-thating and spending long time actually dressing. I must be able to just grab a couple items and wear them without ending up looking ridiculous, so I like easy-to-put-together items that all go with each other, which enables me to mix and match.
I'm a shorts and pants girl, except a couple skirts and dresses that I own but literally never wear. I tent to stick with an "audrey" silhouette: high waist, slim (mostly ankle-lenght- I know it's supposed to be unflattering, but I don't think so) pants or shorts; simple, relaxed tops and flats- both because I feel like it works the best with my slender pear shape and it's a timelessly and universally nice look.
though quite simplistic, my syle is not at all futuristic and tends to have a vintage feeling to it. I always pair basics with cult items from the past for a fresh eclectic finish.
my color palette constitutes of navy, cream, nudes, raspberry, red, khaki and green. as much as I adore color, I'm not the one who can mix & match brights. I usually don't use more than one pop item per outfit. powder pinks and pale nudes complement (and don't overpower like darker/brighter colors do) my skintone the best, so I usually form my outfits around basic nude tops, and then add something more exciting, whether it's a bright tomato red lipstick, my raspberry messenger bag, or a pair of colored jeans- I like occasional usage of leopard print too; such as a bag or shoes.
striped tops are an essential in my wardrobe; I'm renowned as "the girl in stripes". I have a very slender upper body, along with a more normal-sized bottom; so it balances out my body, that might be a possible explanation on why I developed this obsession in the first place.
I have neither the occasion nor the motivation to wear heels; it's almost always simple ballet flats and loafers for me. after I moved to france, I discovered bensimon sneakers, which have been called "french girls' converse", and I'm progressively working on my bensimon collection now.

there's something incredibly magical about the idea of a lovely holiday town full for a week with movie stars, directors and producers, I think that's at least one of the reasons why we are so obsessed with cannes film festival. in the haze of this lovely marketing madness the royal wedding has caused, butter london has created the shade "no more waity, katie" (psst, after kate's eight-year-long wait for walking down the aisle), described as "a soft griege littered with lilac glitter". sounds good to me, in every sense. oops: the shade is not available in the UK.

unfortunately, maybe because she lives in the UK so she just couldn't get her hands on a bottle of it, kate didn't opt for this lovely piece of liquid humour on her nails for the big day, but instead kept them prim & proper in a mix of bourjois so laque! nailpolish in rose lounge and essie nailpolish in allure. for a similar look, pros suggest sweet heart by OPI. now, off to the store!

pardon the unnecessarily cordial tone I will use when talking about the british royal family. being an old, old fan (seriously, let's hope my irish friend won't read this, fingers crossed); I've simply been around for too long not to do so. finally, we got wills married!

This couple was simply too sweet to pass by.

I was waiting for the wedding of prince william and kate middleton with an enthusiasm that perhaps matched to theirs in degree, for the big day I probably rose almost as early as they did, and by now I'm sure the house of windsor is more over the whole wedding fever than I am. so, dare I say, here you have my verdict: it was so much like being at a friend's wedding, I loved it- to the extent that at a first glance I felt like the event kind of lacked the necessary dose of va-va-voom for a major royal wedding, but now looking back I appreciate the understated elegance of every single detail and how they managed to make it so wills & kate rather than just royal- you know, little things: the convertible aston martin with the "JU5T WED" plate they left buckingham palace with, that kate chose to do her own makeup, disco balls in buckingham palace- I'm completely sold.

I didn't feel like it's the best wedding dress I've ever seen, but it still pleased me thoroughly and has been growing on me. going mcqueen for the wedding was possibly the best choice kate could make, both as a tribute to the late designer and his contribution to the british fashion scene (basically defining and re-shaping the brit style, I'd say). the gown definitely has the royal finery to it, but in the most sublime and delicate way, rather than overstating the fact. it tells so much about future the path newlyweds are planning to take and I love it. see how quickly lilly of the valley in bridal boquets and that grace kelly-inspired lace bodice become the next big things. and oh, that dreamy, crystal-like veil! by the way, princess kate, you got yourself a new fan here.

everybody looked so radiant and happy, including the queen. and are those three spencer blondes simply too beautiful to be real or is that some kind of cheerleader effect?

yes, william may be going bald. william may not be the big deal he was five, six years ago. but I love how they are a smart, strong, loving young couple who have their feet on the ground for sure. plus you can still marry prince harry.

a newcomer's guide to paris: "magic urban" hat shop

Still haven't been to Louvre, but nearly every single remarkable shopping spot in Paris, therefore I thought I should start with them.

Parisiennes really love their beret basque, and so do I. As soon as I arrived, I started looking for a real french beret but all I could find was either cheapo unshapely berets without inner trimming, or proper ones that I can't afford. Then I came across this article, and thought, why not try this one? Next thing I know is that I was on the way.

Magic Urban is a lovely traditional hat shop situated right next to the metro station République, full with fine and quite reasonably-priced paddycaps, panamas, fedoras, berets basque and many more. Inside I finally found the perfect dark blue ("bleu foncé") beret I was looking for at 15€. Don't forget to chat with Mocher, the shopkeeper, and ask for his advice. No credit cards.

I moved to paris a week ago.

now this would probably explain my long absence from the blogging world. I didn't purely love paris initially- the transition was a tough one for me. for one thing; paris housing market is exhaustingly competitive. for another; just standing there looking puzzled with a map on your hand isn't enough to make people don't come up to you and show you the way (it does pretty much everywhere I've been). and other things. anyways, it quickly got better upon discovering that I can have tartes aux framboises each day for breakfast and buy an almost-mint condition vintage longchamp bag for 10 €.

now I gotta tell you all about the parisiénnes, those lovely careless creatures strolling around with their chunky scarves wrapped around. everybody's so (naturally) well dressed I can swear it's a dream. yes, there are a lot of french berets; almost as if they are obligatory (and I'm happy to oblige). amazing (and actually wearable) vintage deals, I've been abusing the stock lately. great breton shirts are everywhere, I'm saving up for a "real deal" at the moment. well, I'm saving up for a lot of things. improving my french. craving over a pair of repetto flats. walking around. adapting. I'll tell you all about it.

by the way; I live ten minutes away from galeries lafayette. sounded like a perfect idea initially, though now I don't know if that's good or bad: I got out strictly for the post office today and then found myself at lafayette, trying on a cashmere sweater, swatching multiple shades of rouge coco and staring at a particular chloé purse- for two hours.

seems like shoemakers are acting upon the dorothy in us nowadays, and heaven knows I can't complain. I don't remember when I started to look for one, but I had my eyes on glitter-dunked shoes for a long time (possibly a cinderella or wizard of oz thing). and now suddenly, they are everywhere: designers seem to be determined to glitter up your feet this season. my absolute favorite would be marc jacobs' pointed-toe "mouse" glitter kitten heels, louboutin's nude-trimmed glitter ballerinas ad and miu miu's pair of glitter oxfords, which is the perfect combination of girly and tomboy; and though not my usual thing, I think giuseppe zanotti's glitter cowboy boots are pure genius. aren't these all the perfect way to dress up your everyday jeans a bit or add a girly tinge to a muted masculine ensemble?

those of you who know me have probably heard that I'm leaving for paris next month, to study there till june. as someone who is obsessed with french chic, I know it would be a fatal mistake to go without a real proper breton. not that I don't own countless breton-like striped shirts and sweaters- so many it's ridiculous, but I'm lacking a "real deal", a heavy-cotton, heavy-duty fishing breton shirt; ohe of those they call "meridien."

as we approach the party season, everybody's eagerly hunting for the perfect party dress.

personally, I adore the retrospective-minimalist evening collection of zara for the season so much that I don't feel like looking any further. ladylike and proper, with a bit of distressed rock'n'roll twist- my thing, exactly! I've especially had my eyes on the lipstick-red dress for a while, but all of them are mouth-watering.

red lips don't have to look vixen: a natural shade of red lip color in a slightly sheer and glossy texture and minimal makeup elsewhere will make you look impossibly innocent and youthful. try a stain or a tinted lip balm instead of your classic red lipstick- you'll be amazed with the result.

red and leopard print, along with the subduilng effect of a ladylike camel coat, is suprisingly sweet. oh, do I need to mention how trendy it is?

complete a classic, muted ensemble with a dash of chunky, sporty red -such as red mittens- to make it joyous and fun.

bookstores have always mesmerised me with their stylishness and tranquility. warm lights, that delicious book scent diffused all around and the almost infinite selection of books to lose yourself in makes an irresistible combination. and for a trip to bookstore, what kind of apparel can be a better choice than 50's-style girly frocks combined with classic accesorizing and horn-rimmed nerd glasses?

I'm a bit obsessed with this 1953 revlon ad nowadays, not only because I adore everything vintage but also it reminds me of these lovely, little but significant things about being a woman. after 57 years after the shade's original release, "cherries in the snow" lipstick and nailpolish are still available today, and if it's such a timeless, universally flattering shade of pink-red, I'm craving to try it. I'll let you know once I get my hands on them!

vogue US picked their favorite fall polishes consisting of surprisingly wearable statement shades such as rich neutrals, lustrous metalics, smoky purples and steely blues, and I'll have to agree. personally, I've got my eyes on M*A*S*H and khaki vert nowadays, though I'm still ecstatic about last spring's greige-taupe nails, and loving beige-camel polishes, which channel season's key color.

right when you think "how much cooler céline can get?", the brand comes up with something that's even cooler. their classic box bag is possibly this season's it bag, and my favorite bag in a long time, too. epitome of this season graceful lady bag trend, with a refreshing touch of 90's minimalism. such a timeless piece yet it captures the zeitgeist so well; it's definitely a hit for me. Press has collaborated with urban outfitters (which might be my favorite store in the whole world) for a collegiate-inspired collection. a tie in princeton orange, a scarf in dartmouth green, a belt in cornell red- perfect for a secret prepster wannabe like I am. though it's a menswear collection, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a couple of these cuties. sadly, it's only available stateswide. not so good news.

yesterday I went to a morrissey party where less morrissey/ the smiths songs were played than it is played in my room on an average night. to take revenge, I felt like taking some wardrobe inspiration from "baby moz"- okay that was perfectly lame, I'll say smiths-era morrissey style while dressing up for a short walk outside today. so should you!

it's easy: an intentional desperation, some slouchiness, some mix and match patterns- and voila; you look enough smiths-obsessed.

oh, by the way, I happened to discover this unpublished demo version of paint a vulgar picture, one of my favorite smiths songs of all time (now that's saying something, considering I basically live on the smiths songs). lots of different lines (now I know why it's called "paint a vulgar picture) and a purer, less processed vocal tone- it might even be better than the actual published version, and suddenly every blurry point about the story told in the song is illuminated. if any of you happens to be a psychopatic morrissey/smiths fan like I am, you might really enjoy this:

today I came across this lovely interview of novelist couple martin amis and isabel fonseca, and thought this photo of them embodies my ideal home: a big library, a simple and clean air eclecticity and a gently worn effect. oh, and somebody to love would help, too.

lazy? audrey hepburn fan? still looking for an extra-easy halloween costume? welcome to the club. oh, and I have the answer that you need: jo stockton of funny face.

a lean, simple, all-over black ensemble is jo stockton's usual daytime look. not a universally recognizable costume, I must admit. but especially if you're going to a classic hollywood-conscious halloween party, it's gonna be oh-so-cool. and, could it be easier? I don't think so.

what you need:

a black turtleneck
cropped black cigarette pants
black penny loafers
a beige parka to throw on if you're cold.
optional: socks, either white or black. she wears a white pair in the famous dancing scene and the promotional photoshoot, and black in the paris tour scene. in my opinion, white should be opted for a signature jo stockton look. actually; there's a pretty interesting story about the socks. during the promotional photoshoot, director stanley donen wanted her to wear those white socks with her black loafers, to add definition. audrey; pretty self-conscious about her rather large feet, refused. it's said that the discussion went as far as audrey ended up reducing to tears, and she had to wear the socks afterall. after seeing the photos, she sent a note to donen, saying "you were right about the socks."
for an extra-jo apppeal, take something nerdy with you, like a book on philosophy- extra points if it's on empathicalism.

for the makeup part; concentrate on eyes: a thick black top liner, falsies and thick groomed brows- even audrey's natural brow shape had to be augmented a bit with brow pencil on top. keep skin nice and matte, and lips muted in a rosey pink.

go for a simple, neat sideparted ponytail. a dab of anti-frizz serum will keep it smooth, shiny and in perfect shape all night.

I'm really glad fashion has taken this 50's-inspired chic, sophisticated and elegant direction this season. and it's not just clothes: seems like these structured "mad men" bags are the perfect arm candy now.

as for me; I first set my eyes on the lovely, precious genuine croc vintage bag that used to belong to my grandma in fifties and it screams "I should belong to betty draper". it's been sitting in my mother's wardrobe forever- not really her thing. so I thought, why not? and although it took me weeks, I finally convinced her to let me borrow the bag for the season. can hardly wait to try it!

here you have the epitome of french chic: you don't need a tremendous amount of effort or terribly flashy pieces. just a beret, a chanel breton shirt, high-waisted trousers, ballerina flats and a slick of red lipstick. skill of effortlessly playing up basics is what defines parisienne style to me.

being the first audrey hepburn movie I've seen, funny face has made a profound impact on my idea of beauty. who could forget the delicious, daring, charming main character jo stockton, played by audrey hepburn? certainly not me. her wit, her bambi eyes, and of course, her black loafers worn with cigarette pants and a black turtleneck. since then, a good pair of loafers define preppy weekend chic- something audrey hepburn or grace kelly would wear.

and finally, their day has come ~~again~~: this season, good ol' penny loafer goes as far as threatening the longstanding reign of the ballet flat. and I certainly can't complain.

classic grandpa loafers completed some of the the looks in chloé's f/w collection. they are also appearing with updated, high-heeled versions in céline, alexander wang, balenciaga and prada. as for me, I'll stick with the original flat loafers. I finally got the pair of topshop loafers, on which I'd had a crush for a while, but I'm already saving up for another pair. oh god.

I hope this bunch of street style photos involving penny loafers gives you some inspiration. and here are my ways- and I'd love to hear how you wear your loafers. I'm pretty obsessed with them, so a few tips would really help.

learn from audrey and complete your loafers with cropped cigarette pants. then pretend you're dancing with fred astaire in a giant hollywood production.

warning: this is not for the faint of heart. go for the bold combination of denim shorts and warm knee-lenght socks for a retro schoolboy appeal.

this photo of the gorgeous model/blogger hanneli mustaparta on the last day of NYFW reminded me of how stylishness is all about being yourself.

her stella mccartney dress is already a gorgeous, outstanding one by itself, and hanneli mustaparta is one of the most beautiful women in the industry, so she could just wear this and look awesome, but she chose to express herself and look awesome at the same time, by adding her own little touches here and there- the little peek at the leopard bra, cat-eye shades, almost-invisible nude pumps, clever belt detail, and the little understated ponytail as a perfect finishing touch. oh, and I particularly appreciate how the shoes, the bag and the belt are non-matching, because it's time for us to get rid of that obsession.

I know I've been bothering deniz's mind an awful lot lately. let's say she was relatively easy to seduce, probably thanks to my delicious chocolate brown leather and my creamy, dreamy shearling trim. and you know what's lovely? I remind her an incredible lot of the shearling aviator jacket she had from age two to five. seems like she has never felt that cool in anything she's worn ever since, and she's still mourning over the day she grew out of that one. I'll give her the perfect opportunity be awesome again. really.
you know; she can wear me along with a simple sweater, a pair of boyfriend jeans, a slouchy satchel in a matching color and those sporty lace-up booties she's been eyeing... and voila, perfect weekend chic. for a winter's night out, I think she would simply throw me on an ensemble of a little black dress, black tights and black pumps, so that I can pop against them. oh, and to glam it up a bit, a slick of red lipstick could work.
can you tell we were made for each other? now all we need is €2,395 of spare cash in her pocket! that shouldn't be too much, right? RIGHT?

I know what I said yesterday, but now the idea of skipping on the school satchel-inspired mulberry alexa and getting a real vintage school satchel instead is growing on me. I love how it's the "real deal", and it appeals immensely to my nerdy side. plus, this way I can save some cash. okay, more than some.

after a day of countless obsessive ebay, etsy, vintage e-shop and google searches with different combinations of the same four or five words related to the topic (mom had to warn me, after seeing a different tan school satchel on the screen of my laptop for the millionth time), here you have what I put together for inspiration.

good news: there's a chance I might get my hands on the lovely mulberry alexa satchel (which I've been kind of obsessed with) sometime soon. however, believe it or not, everything's not coming up roses. I'm seriously struggling between black and oak. frankly, oak appeals a lot more to me, it's what first comes up to my mind when I think of mulberry alexa. but unfortunately (fortunately?) I already own a mulberry bayswater tote in oak, and I'm not so sure if I want two mulberry bags of the same color and similar shape... and black seems to be more of a color of all seasons, and however shades of camel are trendy this season, you know, I don't buy a designer bag everyday.

I could use some help from my lovely readers... what do you think?

I had been planning to talk about turkish fashion scene here for a while. today I'll introduce you to a turkish brand, ipekyol. it's a favorite shopping spot for both my mother and myself, with its ageless high-quality designs and timeless investment pieces.

I took a look at their fall/winter lookbook and it made me so proud that a a turkish brand has created such a great collection, with some lovely visuals on the lookbook, and I immediately knew I had to share it with my lovely readers. take a look at some of my favorite pieces from the collection, and don't forget to see the whole lookbook here, it's lovely and full of inspiration. seems like I'll break the bank this fall.

as if she's not cool enough, I came across this shoot of alexa chung, wearing a meat is murder t-shirt in the coolest way possible.

leopard print: it's not what you think.

alexa chung is the cover girl l'officiel's august issue, paying homage to sixties, and with all her feline charm, to leopard prints.

what strikes me the most in this shoot is the use of leopard print. interpreted in the most unusual way; I'm amazed how leopard print gives here a very different feeling than what we're used to: retro, childlike and yes, feminine and wild but in a pristine way. apparently, it can look very cute indeed when used on the right pieces- as alexa demonstrates perfectly with the loose, girly dress and the manly hat.

this adorable new approach is a good opportunity to get over the leopard prejudice, or even phobia. that's exactly what I'm gonna do.

checking out some of her outfits from the past, I realized she does this whole leopard thing so well, in her lovely wild-granny-goes-back-to-school way.

(bonus: lovely sienna miller, also wearing leopard. not too fond of leopard jeans myself)

it hasn't always been this way, but the idea of getting a tattoo has been growing on me, immensely.
particularly (or maybe even solely) tattoos consisting of words- it marks your identity and existence as an intellectual being, they will be there to remind you what you want to remember, day and night, and I'm absolutely in love with the possibility of being attached to some particular words so strongly that you want to carry them on your body forever and ever. and yes, there are a couple I can think of as being in that position for me.

I recently discovered the group "50 celebrity dates challenge" on polyvore, where you basically try to complete 50 sets based on imaginary dates with different celebrities. my two favorite things in life -fashion and celebrity crushes- come together... and polyvore is probably the third. naturally, I didn't hesitate one second to jump on the board.

ever since I saw this stylish new yorker's photo at the sartorialist -I believe it was the one that started the trend-, I've been thinking about double-denim; wearing denim items both on bottom and top. a lot of times, fashion is all about falling in love with what you recently hated, but this time, it was tough to admit. all in all, we highly despised double-denim for longer than a decade. we have very bad memories of it, don't we?

I love challenge more than I should. and having seen how cool it can be when done right, it was impossible for me to avoid. but I was afraid of it at the same time, so I stepped back and silently watched what's going on for a while, and took notes how to rock this trend at its best and avoiding looking dated.

bringing together items noticeably different textures and colors than each other definitely helps, as Alexa Chung perfectly demonstrates here. another thing is that it's easier to mess up with denim jackets. denim shirts are much safer and definitely more modern. any other double-denim tips or thoughts?

recently, I finally felt like I had the guts to try it on and went for a very masculine, retro and americana look, combining my medium-to-light washed boyfriend denim shirt with dark skinny jeans. I tucked the denim shirt in and opened the buttons up except the bottom two to show my new t-shirt with this gorgeous James Dean (circa Giant I believe) print on.

after making sure I wasn't looking like I was preserved in ice since early nineties, I completed the look with brogues, large tan tote and belt, nude-beige nails and a peachy nude lip. to add some femininity, I finished with an extra coat of mascara- what can be more girly than a fan of bambi lashes?

I'd love to have more excuses to wear blazers. the excuse usually comes only in the form of spring or autumn, when coats are too warm and cardigans are too light, and I abuse it throughly. my current blazer obsession is on sailor-style, navy blazers with golden buttons.

the love story started after seeing theory double-breasted wool-blend jacket at net-a-porter.com. as a huge fan of masculine pieces, naval accents and playing up classics -I've always openly admired my dad's navy blazer with golden buttons-, I suddenly and deeply fell in love with it. since then, I've been paying more -read "too much"-attention to this style. is it just me or they are seen around a lot nowadays? well, all I know is that we need to get our hands on one quickly, before the blazer-season approaches towards the end!

keeping the rest of the outfit simple and clean -with personal touches here and there, of course- puts the emphasis on the jacket.

I wasn't too excited about the new Alice in Wonderland movie, but this tom binns for disney couture necklace got me into the mood. now all I need is some extra cash... 535 pounds to be exact.

spring finally seems to hit the town, and with the great dose of inspiration I got from the necklace, I put this outfit together.

a basic nude pink tank top creates the perfect canvas to show off the necklace. muted brigths and different textures coming together for a cheerful, spring-y, understated chic finish.

berry-stained lips

I've always loved the idea of a berry-stained pout. strong color meets sheer texture for a flattering and natural look that's a bit innocent and childish -think popsicle pout- and thanks to its "just-bitten" appeal, definitely unusually sultry, in an appropriate way of course.

nowadays; deep cherry, mulberry or wine shades are growing on me. though it's usually more common on fall/winter fashion shows, I find it to be such a fresh look for the spring. especially paired with nude outfits, it's just irresistible.

since it's so striking on its own, you don't really need to put a lot of effort on the rest of your face- I complete the look with pale, natural-looking skin, subtly defined brows, a bit of barely-there highlighter and a dash of mascara.

to get this look; you can go for either a lipstain, sheer lipstick or gently pat a more opaque lippie and smudge it for a matte transparent finish. another technique is to put a thick swipe of deep lipstick on, leave it on for a couple minutes, then blot it off with a tissue- this really stains your lips.

I use a sheer berry lipstick that's slightly dewy in texture, but also willing to try a stain ASAP!

is it just me, or do you do it aswell? through the years, I developed the strange habit of pulling together an imaginary look for the oscars. here's this year's look- and I bet that after this post, the academy will be really sorry for not having invited me.

this fairy-dusted, gorgeous nude valentino baby is the ultimate perfect oscar dress for me- I'd pick it up in a minute. in fact, I can hardly think of anything else nowadays

I'd go for a natural but striking makeup look: porcelain skin, berry-stained lips, a bit of ivory highlighter, defined brows and some mascara, kinda like oldschool liv tyler. and my signature loose, intentionally tousled waves of course. ok, this picture of liv tyler is misguiding, I know I wouldn't be exactly as breathtaking, but it's a good look for anyone, not just for elves.

for a little pop of color, I'd wear berry-colored pumps and take a tiffany blue clutch with me, and I'd be good to go. very good to go indeed.

one of my favorite Oscar looks is presenter Cameron Diaz's. her strapless champagne gown with golden paillette embroidery sprinkled on is fit for a queen- the perfect choice for her sunny, festive cali girl glow. Oscar de la Renta gets it right all the time.

the sheer tomato lip (CHANEL rouge coco in gabrielle, also dabbed on cheeks) and the gentle wash of golden shadow on her lids (CHANEL soft touch eye shadow in sand) is just perfect, though I feel like rimming the eyes all the way around wasn't a great idea- too heavy to combine with with red lips, so it makes her look a bit older. it would be just right if she had it only on the upper lashline.
her beachy waves are channel the old hollywood glamour in a modern way. I like loose, relaxed, kinda tousled hairstyles better with red carpet gowns- it's always refreshing.

the fact that Miley "sensation-amongst-nation's-five-year-olds" Cyrus has been invited to Academy Awards two years in a row kills my faith towards the industry, and believe me, I'd love to, but I can't hate her dreamy, sparkly nude-beige Jennifer Packham dress with a corset-style bodice... though Miley kind of ruined it with this strange posture, but maybe I shouldn't blame her- too tight? seems so.

I like the sheer, fresh colour palette in her makeup, and the subtle emphasis on the eyes, though it makes them look even smaller. also, her upper lip is just really weird, and the super-shiny lipgloss makes it look uber-odd, so I think she should have opted for a not-so-shiny lipstick instead, but I like the color- a pretty nude-pink that doesn't wash her face out. messy bouffant updo completes the bedroom/boudoir look nicely, but I still hate Miley with a passion.

not just an oscar-worthy performace, sandra bullock also has an oscar-worthy look. no place for a razzie here! she looked breathtaking in her customized Marchesa gown: delicious fabric and vintage beading, perfect shape, and still nicely understated. such a timeless, unforgettable dress- we won't hate it next year, or ten years later.
I can't help wondering; is it just me or the sleek veronica lake hair makes you want to go straighten your hair aswell?

one thing that initially didn't really feel like the right choice was the cranberry-pink lipstick, it looked a bit too raw and seemed like a true red or a sheer wine-berry would complete the look better. but during her acceptance speech, I realized the shade looked just perfect on the stage (and more red)- she looked youthful, glowy, elegant and, defined and natural. I guess it's a question of lighting. the lipstick (CHANEL rouge coco lip colour in paris, in case you're wondering) just didn't agree with the lighting of the red carpet, which seems to be more cool-toned than the stage's.

chanel has been setting the nail trends lately- remember the jade-mania, which I'm definitely not over yet, and not planning to be anytime soon.

this season, "the one" is called particuliére, a pretty taupe shade (or "greige" -for gray/beige-, as they say nowadays). first seen @ chanel's s/s 2010 fashion show, suiting the rustic, natural appeal of the collection, it quickly spread from runways to red carpets & streets.

as it's in a point between some of my favorite nail colors, it immediately appealed to me- certainly more neutral and flattering than gray and more interesting than beige/nude. cool without being overly dramatic. I can see it going very well with this spring's sheer/boudoir trend, complementing english rose patterns -as always, my favorite for the spring, or balancing out brights. so, I'm almost certain to try it soon. do you think it's wearable, or planning to sport it yourself anytime soon?

I can't help but love everything about her look- the gorgeous little black dress, subdued peachy pink makeup, lined gazelle-like eyes, poufed half-updo- such a wonderful adaptation of breakfast at tiffany's style!
I don't say this often about people, but she seriously reminds me of my beloved audrey here. she has the elegance, grace and love in her eyes. who'd say two people physically so different would remind me of each other one day?

my love affair with mix & match patterns and vintage appeal goes on, which gives me enough reason to fall in love with this Elle US editorial aswell. totally sold on the vermillon-orange lip color, too. I think it gives a retro appeal as a classic red lip red does, but in a much more casual, fresh and original way. can anybody recommend a similar shade?

I guess the key to great nude makeup is being a good observer- you should look for what's naturally striking in people's faces.
some people have lovely naturally pigmented lips, some have lush lashes and brows. some have great color combinations on their faces. I have a friend whose cheeks are always naturally flushed in a beautiful dusty rose shade- she's my major inspiration in cheek-accented makeup. another friend has a gorgeous ivory complexion that's somehow naturally glowy, and she's what I mostly think of when highlighting my cheeks. children always have great coloring because they are so fresh, they always inspire me.

here are some looks that I feel like embody this approach to nude makeup.

a juicy, sheer bitten rosewood lip shade and minimal makeup elsewhere- quite remarkable.

how I love childlike, youthful cheeks!

I'm a huge fan of this popsicle pout look. a lipstain or sheer lipgloss in a cranberry shade will do. it just turns the heads- I find well done nude makeup much more exciting and interesting than bright, theatrical looks.

all you need is not love but lush brows.

warm, bronze-y pink cheeks and a cool-toned mauve lip- how lovely, I must admit I could never ever come up with this idea by myself.

it's all about the skin here- I adore this dewy candlelight glow.

my trick for natural-looking lush lashes is to line the upper lashline with a dark brown/cocoa colored pencil (black won't give the desired effect) and gently smudge it with the tip of my finger, then apply mascara. it truly looks like you have a full, fluffy fan of lashes. gazelle eyes au naturel- it's a very Audrey look! it looks most striking when completed with full brows

here are my favorite products for nude makeup- I'm in a constant hunt for them.

MAC blush in fleur power:
it's a bright and pigmented matte pink-coral powder blush. looks scary in the pan, but the effect on cheeks is gorgeous and surprisingly natural- I guess it's the closest color to how most women have their cheeks naturally flush into. it's such a universally flattering shade, I've heard women of pretty much every kind of coloring to rave about this blush.

Bobbi Brown pot rouge in pink raspberry:
my absolute staple; this gorgeous raspberry pink cream blush doubles as lipcolor aswell. the color is just lovely, it's so striking and natural at the same time. I love the slightly dewy finish it has. a bit expensive but I'm convinced it's worth every penny.

MAC select tint spf 15 tinted moisturizer:
MAC, you should have really hated me to have discontinued this, what am I gonna do once I run out of this bottle full of magic? it's oil-free, it doesn't make my skin oilier, decently hides pores and minor imperfections while letting my skin show up, has a lovely dewy finish, has spf and never ever breaks me out- I'm pretty sure it's not worse for my skin than a plain moisturizer.

MAC cream color base in pearl:
lovely cream highlighter- MAC describes it as "Soft pale gold with icy shimmer" I'd say ivory with a slight champagne hue. ideal for naturally highlighting & emphasizing. I use it everywhere- brow bone, cheeks, bridge of nose, inner corners of eyes.it's very convenient, I usually put it on with fingers straight from the pan.

NYX round lipstick in b52:
I'd describe this shade as wine-stained dusty rose. romantic, natural and very flattering; it's ideal for the days you want to put the emphasis on your lips without being overly dramatic. rather than applying straight from the tube and putting it on thick, I smudge it on my lips with fingers.

NYX round lipstick in circe:
A beige/milky nude shade. I don't really like putting a full swipe of this- I just gently pat it on my lips to tone down the color naturally. it has a nice matte, even slightly powdery finish that's not drying at all.

Max Factor false lash effect mascara:
I don't even remember how many tubes of this mascara I've gone through. it might be the only field of my life in which I've been consistent. its brush legendary- gives amazing lenght and gorgeous natural-looking volume while perfectly separating each lash. even my dad has complemented on how great my lashes look, and believe me, that doesn't happen a lot!

Burt's Bees beeswax lip balm:
besides being a fantastic, lightweight, eco-friendly lip balm, this one also seems to increase the blood circulation on my lips and give them a naturally rosy look, thanks to the peppermint in it. I don't know if it does that to everyone, but the effect is obvious on my lips. I always put on a swipe of this before going to bed at night and before applying lipstick in the morning, and some days I just don't feel like putting on anything else because it looks good enough to be worn alone!

BeYu soft liner for eyes & more no: 674
it's a lovely soft, longlasting liner (it sets and goes waterproof in 30 seconds) I use for lining my upper lashline. it has a really dark cocoa color, which is dark enough to create drama but still looks wonderfully natural.

H&M bronzing powder
I love my light complexion, but I often feel like I look too pale, so a slight dust of bronzer has become a staple, and I recently fell in love with this H&M beauty. I love its caramel-brown tone because nobody bronzes red except oompa loompas, that's something a lot of makeup brands don't understand. looks like it has some slight shimmer in it on the pan, but shimmer doesn't really show up on your face- just helps to hide imperfections and give that healthy, naturally glowy complexion look. I think I got it for about four pounds- steal alert!

falling in lust with military jackets

as a big-time antimilitarist, I can allow only this much military in my life.

jackets with military accents have been around for a while now. they are such characteristic, attractive, stylish items. as much as I adore them, at first I thought this trend would be quickly over-used -I love fashion but not being a fashion victim-, and tended to shy away from it, like I do with anything too temporary -except my little black "military cardigan" from H&M I've had for a while, which doesn't really give that effect.

these lovelies are sticking around for a little bit longer, and luckily it didn't become one of those "so many people has worn it's now nauseating" kind of trends, and I finally dared to grab one. during my stay in London, I picked up a navy military jacket with gold accents from H&M (no idea why H&M became my main military-inspired garnment supplier, really). I couldn't be happier with it. it fulfills my intense passion for statement pieces.

some celebrity inspiration -though it's never as good as street style. real people do it better.

Lindsay Lohan's way is surprisingly sweet and fresh, it's definitely a hit to me.

I think these styles leave the door open for you to get creative- you can wear your military jacket just about any way. just one thing to remember: try to avoid a full-on military look, it's costume-y not cool. it's a piece with a life, a stand of its own that adds some instant edge to your wardrobe-you can use it to liven up a plain outfit or mix it with other striking items in an eclectic manner.

here's a couple ways to wear military jackets I put together:

let yourself free and play it up! for a fresh, youthful and creative look, combine your jacket with a marine-inspired striped sweater, jean shorts and red wellies. complete with a swipe of rich tomato-red lipstick (try MAC lipstick in lady bug, my all-time favorite red) and minimal makeup elsewhere. you can add tights depending on the weather. very teen vogue!

I'm in love with this new american harper's bazaar editorial with with gorgeous arlenis sosa.
these pretty bubble skirts, fitting little sweaters and cropped jeans are the absolute essentials of a spring wardrobe to me. stripes, polka dots, brights, vivid patterns were brought together in a down-to-earth, sunny, warm manner. the looks were completed with little scarves and chunky, colorful bracelets- very clever accesorizing indeed.
it's very audrey and very all-american girl at the same time, with mediterreanean touches. and those gorgeous laced peep-toes are just about perfect!

hey lovelies, sorry for my long absence, but I have some really good excuses... and I promise to make you forgive me.

I recently got the chance to spend a week in London, and other than falling in love with it in every possible way, I must add that, in terms of style, it was good enough to convince me that it's the most stylish city in the world. here you can feel the long-established classic british style coming together perfectly with the multicultural background. a liberating, refreshing experience indeed.

brits certainly get the theatricality & humor of it. they love unexpected color pops and mixing & matching brights. they are not shy to try out bold trends- I saw lots of liquid leggings, high-top sneakers and military jackets. their classic barbour coats, tweeds and tartans are still around to be played up, though. they use a lot of fur. I must add that brit girls aren't very much into pants- lots of colorful tights and leggings instead, and some really skinny jeans. and when it comes to shoes, you can spot tons of doc martens (as expected) and brogues. a lot of pieces they wear have a strong vintage appeal- the city has one of the best vintage scenes ever- I picked up a few items myself!

in my last day in London, I suddenly got the crazy idea of playing the Sartorialist around the city. I just started approaching well-dressed people, and asking them if I can take their photos for my fashion blog. I think I got rejected only two times, other than that everything was peachy. and what's so interesting is they're not aware of their stylishness- I heard a lot of them saying "me? I'm not stylish!" and looking really flattered. maybe that's because there are so many well dressed people around.

I had brought along a small, mediocre digital cam to London, so the pics didn't turn out very well, but I hope it will give you a hint of London street style from my perspective. actually, I enjoyed it so much I can tell you'll see me Sartorialist-ing many more times soon.

this Japanese gentleman was the first person I shot. I think he was a school teacher because he was with the Japanese school group. his outfit is just perfect, finally someone who gets menswear so well.

here's the Japanese school group. they customized their uniform with different little coats, varieties of (mostly tartan and sometimes woven) scarves cool brogues and totes. I love this preppy, ivy league-esque style.

what a lovely duo- epitome of brit classic casual. and they prove it runs in the family! I got to talk to the grandpa for a bit
