inspired by: dsquared² fall 2009 rtw

oh, eclectic styles... I'm pretty convinced there's nothing cooler.

fall can be boring sometimes. if you feel trapped, to bring some excitement to your style life, you can take inspiration from dsquared's fall collection, as I'm doing nowadays. dsquared² did a great job combining this season's tougher and smoother styles in a very casual way to the perfect balance, with unexpected pops of color and pattern.

from style.com :
"this collection was all about the high-low mix: T-shirts, preppy pastel button-downs, and boyfriend jeans topped off with a snug washed leather jacket and a trucker hat; a pair of tank tops tucked into a mini made from a Chanel-ish plaid bouclé; or a faded denim jacket tossed on over a black jersey gown with crystal straps. Nearly every look was accessorized with knit caps, sunglasses, and bling."

(see the whole collection here )
boyfriend blazers, leather jackets, beanie hats, baseball caps, tote bags, boyfriend jeans, chino pants, plaid shirts, button downs, jean vests, leopard patterns and leggings are... sort of mandatory.
some looks I put together:
inspired by dsquared fall rtw-2

looks were completed with unkempt but gorgeous "just-rolled-out-of-bed" hair with smudged gunmetal smokey and glossy, sweet nude lips... hangover chic!

literary clutch bags

recently, I've been craving over some books in particular. or, as style.com says, “the ‘books’ in question are actually rectangular box clutches that feature hand-knit copies of the covers of some favorite reads.”

I came across these book-shaped clutch bags made with canvas, embroidered and silk-thread, created by charming parisienne Olympia Le-Tan and immediately fell in love with every single one of them.

Le-Tan used  the first edition covers as the reference point, which is amazing in my opinion. the collection is titled "you can't judge a book by its cover", and sold exclusively at colette in paris. got some extra cash? go buy one.

beautiful Olympia Le-Tan, posing with one of her creations. love love love.

(photos from dazed digital and beautiful/decay)

the idea of turning an object people carry to be cool into a clutch bag... this is what I call creativity. I totally have my eyes on for whom the bell tolls and 1984.

sometimes you can judge a book by its cover, apparently.

outfit of the day: pretty pissed off

I think fashion is such a good way of self-expression, rather than a tool for looking good. each morning, in front of my wardrobe, I feel like writing a story, word by word. some days it just comes out easier, and some days you have to stop and think of every detail.

this is what I wear in my not-so-right days.particularly, a biker jacket always helps expressing dissatisfaction and spleen. it really makes me feel a bit better. some sarcasm helps, too. baggy boyfriend jeans is my way of saying "I'm too tired to pay attention". I tend to go a bit stronger on eye makeup in those days.

life's not treating me well today, which makes me so childishly angry towards everything. I'm trying so hard too keep it to myself, and it just inflates the bubble.

hope your sun's shining today, though.

mmm....not so much love.

outfit of the day: french chic

for this outfit, I thought of a cloudy, lazy afternoon in paris. I feel like the style called "french chic" is the perfect cross between masculine and feminine, grace & elegance and scruffines. best of the both worlds!

P.S. this post is in honor of the possibility I'll be in paris next fall! I'm doing my exchange application right now. and believe me, then I'll do some real french chic.

etsy find: sometimes it's just a hat, but not this time

today I found this on etsy and it made my day.

I think I've never grown out of the little prince phase, which I've been in since the time I was four years old.
I quite precisely remember the time a friend of my mother briefly told me the story of the little prince to entertain me on a long road trip. It apparently worked: I found it enchanting, and it encouraged me even more to learn how to read. shortly after I did, she sent me a copy.
after reading it for the first time, I promised myself never to become one of the adults who mistake a boa constrictor digesting an elephant for a hat and don't even think twice about it.
after all these years, I still often find myself doing the self "boa-check".

from the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry:

"[....] after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked something like this:

I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.
But they answered: "Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?"
My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of a boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like

The grown-ups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them."

lots of love.

outfit of the day: esprit d'automne

tartan patterns, rich, warm wool textures, deep greens and occasional pops of color (particularly red) are what fall means to me, in terms of fashion. I wanted this set to have all these, and have a preppy-girly but kinda casual feeling to it.
btw, I fell hard for the coat in every single aspect, but since I don't quite have $860 at the moment, it's more like a celebrity crush.
enjoy & keep warm.

sartorialist favorites - part I

seriously, is there anyone not obsessed with the sartorialist?
this blog makes me feel that we live in a beautiful world and fills my mind with inspiration and joy of dressing up everytime I take a look at it. scott schuman (aka the sartorialist) is so good at capturing the wonderfulness of street style. I want to share with you guys some of my favorite sartorialist looks lately:

oh, such a poetic look this young man has. he has a very -effortless-gothic feeling to me: the dramatic contrast between the milky skin and flame-red hair, the dramatic, severe, strong expression on his face, and of course; the colours and materials of his blazer and scarf. shoes make a beautiful addition and balance it out perfectly.

I am quite convinced that she's a fairytale princess... the tale takes place in 21st century milano. oh, seriously, could she look any nicer? what I most love about this look is that it's not very matchy-matchy. every single piece has a life of its own, yet they complement each other flawlessly. so perfectly put together. the pumps & the skirt are so cinderella aren't they? and of course, I should mention, the perfect accesory to every outfit; a pair of endless, killer legs.

this one pretty much defines male attractiveness to me... if you cover the pack of cigarettes on his hand.

oh, so well-tailored, so clean I swear I can even smell his aftershave & soap from the photo. I truly admire people who can understand and apply basics of clothing so well, and I must admit that I have a really soft spot for men wearing blue oxford shirts, too. always extra points for cuffed sleeves.

we must all thank this young lady for sporting some of season's major trends in such a genuine, fresh, personalized way. I love the bohemian feeling of the olive/bronze biker jacket, and it's quite refreshing to see one in a color other than black (readers, take note!) and it complements her olive skin tone in such a beautiful way.
when it comes to shoes, cuffed boyfriend jeans can be tough to combine. the combo with these shoes seem to have the proportion just right.

halloween costume ideas- number two: holly golightly from breakfast at tiffany's

who can forget the image of gazelle-like audrey hepburn gazing behind her big dark sunglasses at the window of tiffany & co store in 5th avenue, while having her breakfast consisting of danish pastry & coffee? or the wet, long smooch between hepburn and george peppard under the rain, with the nameless cat in between?

breakfast at tiffany's is an unforgettable movie in many ways. for this halloween, let this beautiful tale of two lonely spirits in new york inspire you.

since breakfast at tiffany's is beyond being my favorite movie & book (more like a lifestyle, a defining point), being holly golightly is always is the first thing that comes to my mind in when I hear the word halloween. here are two holly golightly costumes I put together:

first, holly's bedtime look:
as expected, holly golightly's sleepwear is anything but ordinary.
I went for this look once, in halloween 2007. this is super easy to pull off, and personally, I like it much better than the regular "black gown plus opera glows plus tiara" look, because you can spot at least one person per party sporting that one. yes, less recognizable, but much more creative.

holly golightly in sleepwear

here's what you need:

*a really large men's tuxedo shirt
*a sleeping mask, preferably similar to holly's, but a simple blue one will work, too.
you can find one like holly wore here and here. this one is super cute aswell. or, you can go for any big, bright, interesting sleeping mask you want. this store has tons of them.
and if you're feeling crafty, go ahead and make one as you like!

*if you can find, tassel earplugs like holly's. this store has an exact replica, but I think you'll be okay without.

*she's barefoot in that scene, but you'll probably have to walk outside at some point, so you can opt for nude-colored flats.

*you can take a orange tabby cat toy with you, to pay tribute to the famous no-name cat holly lives with.

before you put on the mask, straighten your hair, tease it around the crown area and put it in a half-up style.

and, here is the final scene look. just to let you know, blair and nate did it, too!

here's what you need:

*a basic beige belted trench coat.
*a little black sheath dress - anyone will do.
*a pair of black pointed-toe kitten heels.

halloween costume ideas- number one: liz lemon from 30 rock

this post is actually about my unnatural obsession with 30 rock, but I decided to keep it in the already defined format of the blog.

I can't exactly make a style analysis post about any character on the show, you know what I mean...
but there's something: just a couple weeks left till halloween. I just couldn't help coming up with the idea of dressing up as liz lemon, tina fey's alterego and the protagonist of the show. I'm so doing this, and I had to share some ideas with you guys.

my friend, if you're looking for a totally awesome yet easy halloween look, liz lemon might be the answer for you, too.

you need:
*a navy blazer
*a cami/shirt to wear inside
*some bootcut jeans
*a pair of sneakers (preferably converse)
*a padded push-up bra (cuz you know, she's totally got'em)
*and of course, black rimmed signature liz lemon glasses.
*not quite necessary, but a really small pendant necklace like liz always has on will work too.

my hair color is quite close to hers, so I won't wear a wig or anything, but you can opt for a cheapo party store one if your haircolor/length is nothing like hers and if you feel like it.

have your hair parted from the middle and make tousled, "I-don't-care" waves, but not like a lush, killer Serena van der Woodsen I-don't-care. It's more of a really desperate, "I don't know what to do with my life" kind of I-don't-care.
you can just let it loose or make a loose bun instead. messy half-up styles are also quite liz.

finishing touches:
* you might want to add some food like, a box of krispy kreme, to pay tribute to her food love. also, having food stains on your shirt or adding some lettuce to your hair will always work, too.

"I'm gonna go talk to some food about that"

*is there anyting more liz lemon than holding a huge, messy pile of paper on your arms?

*the right attitude.

btw, WATCH SOME 30 ROCK PEOPLE. RATINGS STILL SUCK.

love.

check out my other halloween posts, too- especially if you're an audrey hepburn/classic hollywood maniac:

things I love: patrick davy music

I thought it's a good idea to talk about stuff I love from time to time, I'll also add some style element to it :)
today, I'm gonna introduce you to patrick davy, a young musician from detroit.

I don't know much about him- I just happened to run into his myspace about a year ago. it was shortly after leaving my beloved michigan and I had just started school here, in a huge city with almost nobody I knew, so it was perfect timing. I was enchanted by his music, it just grew and grew on me everyday. I am so proud of my discovery, I added one more item to my "soundtracks to my life" list.

he has some pretty mature words to say, yet it's still so young and fresh. you can feel the very distinct kind of gloom almost unique to detroit. it's a lot like an artistic, beautiful heartache.

don't you just love the inspiring combination of a very young person; a blossoming brand new life and the city of detroit; a ghost city, tough as hell, out of hope?
the city's almost like a biblical story, so surreal. so beautifully destroyed.

how amazing and scary life is.

if this sounds good to you, take a a look at his myspace page or website, where you can find his tracks, videos & info.
amongst the songs, my personal favorites are -though I developed a personal connection with almost all the songs over time-  we cannot return and where it began.
what do you think? have I added anyone to the fan army?

lastly, for my blog's name's sake, I made a polyvore set where I took inspiration from what patrick davy music and detroit makes me feel. enjoy!
